Wegovy Pills vs Wegovy Injections: What’s the Difference?

Wegovy is now available in the UK in two very different formats: a weekly injection and a daily pill.

Both contain semaglutide, but that does not mean they are interchangeable on a milligram-for-milligram basis.

Here is what actually differs.

Are Wegovy pills and injections the same medicine?

Both contain semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist used for weight management in appropriate patients.

The way the medicine gets into the body is different, however.

The injection is administered under the skin.

The pill has to pass through the digestive system, which is why its dosing and instructions are different.

How often do you take them?

This is probably the easiest difference to remember.

Wegovy injection: generally once a week.

Wegovy pill: once a day.

Some people may prefer remembering one injection each week.

Others may prefer taking a pill every morning.

There isn’t a universally “better” option — convenience is quite personal.

What doses are used?

The pill begins at 1.5 mg daily and may increase through 4 mg and 9 mg to 25 mg daily.

Injectable Wegovy uses a completely different dose schedule.

That is why you cannot simply compare the number of milligrams on a pill with the number printed on an injection pen.

They are different formulations with different absorption.

Is the pill easier to take?

That depends what you mean by easier.

You do not need to inject the pill, but you do need to follow fairly specific instructions.

The pill should be taken after an overnight fast of at least eight hours with a small amount of water, followed by at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking.

So while there is no needle, there is a bit more morning admin.

Tea may have to wait.

Which works better?

Both formulations contain semaglutide and have clinical evidence supporting weight management.

Oral semaglutide 25 mg produced substantial weight loss in the OASIS 4 trial.

However, comparing results between separate clinical trials is not the same as a direct head-to-head comparison in the same participants.

Your prescriber can help determine which formulation is most appropriate for you.

Do they have the same side effects?

There is significant overlap.

Common semaglutide side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting.

Side-effect experiences vary from person to person.

Changing from injection to pill should therefore be discussed with a prescriber rather than treated as an automatic solution to side effects. Read more in our Wegovy pill side effects guide .

Can you switch from injections to pills?

For some people, yes.

The MHRA states that people treated privately with 2.4 mg weekly Wegovy injections can be transitioned directly to the 25 mg daily pill where clinically appropriate.

That switch should be managed by a healthcare professional.

Which is cheaper?

This is where things can get interesting.

Different pharmacies may charge different amounts for pills and injections, and costs may also vary according to dose, delivery fees and whether you are a first-time or repeat customer.

So don’t compare one advertised price in isolation.

Compare the total amount you will actually pay.

Health Compare UK lets you compare current provider information in one place.

Which should you choose?

The right option depends on more than whether you dislike needles.

Things to discuss with a prescriber include:

  • your medical history
  • previous GLP-1 treatment
  • side effects
  • lifestyle
  • ability to follow the pill fasting instructions
  • treatment preference

For some people, once-weekly dosing will be simpler.

For others, a daily pill may be much more appealing.

The takeaway

Wegovy pills and Wegovy injections contain the same active ingredient but are different formulations with different dose schedules and instructions.

Don’t try to convert doses yourself.

If you’re comparing private treatment costs, compare the full price rather than just the headline figure. For a full overview of doses and pricing, see our Wegovy pills UK prices and doses guide .
