Wegovy pills may be new, but they are not an over-the-counter slimming pill.
They are prescription-only medicines and must be prescribed following an appropriate clinical assessment.
So who are they actually authorised for in the UK?
Who may be eligible for Wegovy pills?
The MHRA authorised Wegovy pills for weight management in adults with:
- a BMI of 30 or above, or
- a BMI from 27 to under 30 together with at least one weight-related health condition.
Treatment is intended to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Does meeting the BMI criteria guarantee a prescription?
No.
BMI criteria are only part of the assessment.
A prescriber will also consider factors such as your medical history, current medicines and whether treatment is appropriate and safe for you.
Different providers may have their own clinical assessment processes within the prescribing rules they must follow.
What dose do you start on?
The approved starting dose is 1.5 mg once daily.
The dose can then increase to:
- 4 mg
- 9 mg
- 25 mg
with a minimum of one month at each dose level.
You should follow the dose prescribed for you rather than increasing treatment yourself because you feel ready to move up.
How do you take the pill?
Wegovy pills have specific administration instructions.
The MHRA states that they should be taken:
- whole
- on an empty stomach
- after fasting for at least eight hours
- with a sip of water
- followed by at least 30 minutes without food or drink
Taking food or drink too soon can reduce how much medicine is absorbed.
What happens when you order privately?
The exact process depends on the provider.
Generally, a UK prescribing service will require a clinical assessment before deciding whether treatment can be supplied.
That may involve questions about your height, weight, health history, current medication and previous weight-management treatment.
Some providers may request additional information or evidence.
What should you compare between providers?
Price matters, but it shouldn’t be the only thing you look at.
Useful things to compare include:
- total cost
- delivery charges
- first-order price
- repeat-order price
- current stock information
- what is included in the service
- whether the provider explains its prescribing and support process clearly
Health Compare UK brings provider pricing information together so you can see the differences more easily.

Are Wegovy pills available through the NHS?
When the pill was authorised in June 2026, it was not currently available through the NHS.
The MHRA said decisions around NHS availability would follow established processes including NICE assessment.
Because that position can change, check current official guidance if you are looking specifically for NHS treatment.
Can existing Wegovy users change to pills?
Potentially.
The MHRA states that privately treated patients taking 2.4 mg injectable Wegovy once weekly can be switched directly to 25 mg oral Wegovy once daily where clinically appropriate.
That is a prescribing decision rather than something to do without medical supervision. For a side-by-side look at both formats, read our Wegovy pills vs injections guide .
The takeaway
Wegovy pills are a new treatment option, but the basic principle hasn’t changed: the right medicine and dose depend on the individual.
If you are considering private treatment, compare providers carefully and look at the complete cost rather than simply whichever headline price appears cheapest.
